Statement from Brad Sperling, Board Chair, on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today we pay special recognition to the vital contributions that Indigenous peoples make to the Peace region. We invite all people of this region to learn about the rich cultures, traditions and languages of the Indigenous peoples of this area, whose traditional lands we live on.

It’s also important to acknowledge that we continue to have tragic reminders of the systemic racism and terrible injustices which Indigenous people have suffered over the years in this country. Today is an opportunity to recognize that we have a long way to go on the journey to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. We need to work together to take all concrete actions that we can to move along that path.

The Peace River Regional District is committed to working with Indigenous peoples of this area in a spirit of respect, cooperation and partnership, and to do all we can to make this region a better place for them and for all people, today and every day.
