To encourage waste diversion, the Peace River Regional District is adjusting commercial tipping fees, effective March 1, 2022, pending approval from the Ministry of Environment.
The rates, which are increasing 5% for sorted waste and 76% for mixed waste, will encourage customers to sort out recyclable materials from their waste streams. When these items are diverted from the landfill, it saves space in the current landfill network and helps to avoid developing new ones.
The increase will affect all industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) users, and may indirectly affect residents and businesses who rent bins. ICI waste refers to the population sector that includes businesses/companies, hospitals and schools.
Haulers are asked to start the conversation with their customers about waste diversion by reviewing the great resources at Recycle BC for themes centered on reducing, reusing and recycling. The PRRD is also asking ICI customers to direct their customers to download the pRRRdy Says app, available through the App Store by searching ‘pRRRdy Says’Â or Google Play, to get waste-wise on what can be recycled in the Peace River region.
