As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) reaffirms its commitment to fostering reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in our region. This day serves as a crucial reminder of our shared history and the ongoing journey towards healing and understanding.
The PRRD acknowledges that we operate on the traditional territories of several First Nations, including the Dane-zaa people, signatories of Treaty 8 and the Métis Nation BC Region 7. We deeply value the rich heritage and ongoing contributions of Indigenous peoples to our region.
Our organization is dedicated to building relationships based on mutual respect, trust and collaboration. We are committed to supporting Indigenous self-determination, pursuing shared economic prosperity and honoring the deep connection First Nations have with the land and water.
Reconciliation is not a one-time event, but a continuous process of learning and action. We are focused on regular engagement with First Nations, educating our staff and the public about Indigenous history and culture and collaborating to support reconciliation efforts.
As we commemorate this important day, I invite all residents to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation in our daily lives. By working together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future for all in the Peace River Regional District.
The PRRD offices will be closed on September 30, 2024, in observance of this day.
