The Government of British Columbia and Northern Health are working on next steps in the procurement process for replacement of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital (DCDH). The design of the new state-of-the-art hospital is approximately 60 per cent complete and continuing to advance. The negotiations with the previously selected builder in 2021 was not successful, and a new proponent is expected to be announced in early 2023, with construction to follow shortly after.
The provincial government, through Northern Health, and the Peace River Regional Hospital District (PRRHD) is funding the replacement project. The purpose of the Regional Hospital District is to cover the regional share (40 per cent) of capital costs of providing approved health care facilities and other grants.
Northern Health has made the PRRHD aware that a request for further increased funding support is impending. To prepare for this request to support a potential increase in total project costs, the PRRHD will implement a tax adjustment that will be capped at 27% of the forecasted final cost of the replacement project.
The PRRHD is taking a proactive approach to inform residents of this incoming tax adjustment; the final project cost and successful proponent are still being finalized and will be announced by Northern Health in a few months.
