Statement from the Chair on International Holocaust Memorial Day

Friday, January 27 is International Holocaust Memorial Day, marking the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland on the same day in 1945. On this 78th annual day of commemoration, the Peace River Regional District joins a global initiative to honour the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism.

The Regional Board and District staff will be observing a minute of silence at 9am. The PRRD is committed to fostering a culturally safe and tolerant environment for all residents of the Peace region. On this day of memorial, we reflect on our responsibility to combat hate speech, anti-Semitism and prejudice.

In addition to International Holocaust Memorial Day, January also marks the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, a date adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on November 1, 2005 through resolution. A suite of educational resources is available through the United Nations outreach program on the Holocaust: https://www.un.org/en/holocaustremembrance.
