Solid Waste Management in PRRD

Recyling activities have increased 75% in the last four years. To find out more about recycling programs go to www.pRRRdy.com.

The PRRD Waste Management function operates regional landfills in:

  • Bessborough
  • Chetwynd
  • Fort St. John
  • A small rural landfill is in operation at Rose Prairie

Transtor facilities (large compacting garbage bins) are operated in:

Total of 35 transfer stations exist throughout the regional district.

Tipping Fees at Landfills and Transfer Stations

Effective April 1, 2012, tipping fees for refuse disposal at landfills and transfer stations will increase as follows:
Regular Waste: from $40/tonne to $45/tonne;
Controlled Waste: from $80/tonne to $90/tonne; and
Restricted Waste: from $120/tonne to $135/tonne.
The minimum fee for regular waste is $3.50

New Penalty for Unsecured Loads!

All unsecured loads arriving at landfills and transfer stations will be charged double the applicable fee.

Other solid waste activities and achievements include:

  • Solid Waste Management Plan updated March 1, 2009
  • Construction of modern, controlled transfer stations will replace unattended existing facilities. Six new facilities are planned in 2012, in the following areas:
    • Kelly Lake
    • Tomslake
    • Pink Mountain
    • Wonowon
    • Prespatou
    • Rose Prairie (existing rural landfill will be converted)
  • Landfill gas management system will be installed at the Fort St. John landfill in 2012
  • On-going public awareness and education programs promoting waste reduction
  • Recycling program to divert multi-materials from landfills
  • Development of wood waste management plan with a pilot composting project
  • Agricultural plastics pilot program to commence in 2012
